Balboa Park is America’s largest urban cultural park and it is filled with stories and that perfect postcard picture.
The park is 1,200 acres (4.9 km²) and centrally located next to downtown San Diego. It contains unique Spanish Colonial style architecture, and is named after the Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa. Many of the trees and gardens were planted by the famous American horticulturalist Kate Sessions. Balboa Park is one of the oldest sites in the United States dedicated to public recreational usage.
Besides open areas and natural vegetation, the park contains a variety of cultural attractions including the Spanish Village Art Center, an assortment of museums, theaters, numerous beautiful gardens, shops and restaurants as well as being the home to famous San Diego Zoo. Balboa Park was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977.
